In GREENWAY CEMETERY, end of Main St., is the GRAVE OF SEN. LeROY PERCY
(1860-1929), marked by a bronze figure, the work of Malvina Hoffman. Possessed
of the courage of his convictions LeRoy Percy became an able and forceful lawyer
and in 1909 was elected to the U. S. Senate, serving until March 4, 1913.
Senator Percy's private and public life was marked by the deep love for his home
county that characterizes the three generations of Percys who have been active
in building the Delta. His outstanding contribution to the Delta was his aid in
organizing the Staple Cotton Association, his connections with the Federal
Reserve System, the Drainage System, and his work for better roads development.
During the World War Senator Percy went to France for the National Y.M.C.A.
The cemetery name is actually the Greenville Cemetery. There are
several generations of the Percy family buried in this plot in the cemetery.
The Percy family has had great impact on the area and have been commemorated with a
street and a library named after members of the family.
