Beloye, the White Lake, is a nearly circular natural lake in the Vologda Oblast area of Russia. It drains southward via the Sheksna River into the Rybinsk Reservoir of the Volga River and is connected to Lake Onegra to the north by the inflowing Kovzha River which is linked to the north flowing Vytegra River by canals and a series of locks.
During the construction of the Volga - Baltic waterway a major dam on the Sheksna River raised the water level of the lake 5 to 6 feet allowing large ships to cross it without further dredging of a navigation channel.
The lake measures about 28.5 miles (46Km) east to west and 20 miles (33 Km ) north to south. Ships travel across the middle of the lake between the origin of the Sheksna River in the southeast end and the mouth of the Kovzha in the northwest. This takes about 2 hours and at times the vessel is out of sight of land.
The shores of the lake were settled as early as the 8th century and it was always important as a trade route and a source of fish. The name may refer to the normal clear colorless nature of the water or to the occasional whitish color produced when storms disturb white clays on the lake bottom.
The Coordinates above were taken from a cruise ship near the middle of the lake.
