When the stadium opened in 1971, it was originally known as Rich Stadium, named after Rich Products, headquartered in Buffalo. It is one of the earliest known examples of naming rights on a professional sports stadium or arena. After the contract expired in 1998, the stadium was named in honor of Ralph Wilson, owner of the Bills.
Originally the stadium held 80,020 people, but a redesign and upgrades in 1998 reduced the capacity to its current amount of 73,967. The second level of seating along the sidelines features heated seats for those cold winter football games. In 2007, a new high definition scoreboard was installed.
