Located on Waipati Beach this cave is a fairly common Tourist attraction for this area and is relatively well sign posted. It can only be reached within 1 hour either side of the low tide and in as much as access is across Private land a small nominal fee is charged for track maintainance and upkeep. From the carpark it is a 25 - 30 minute walk down through Podocarp and Kamahi forest to Waipati Beach and then a short stroll east along the beach to the cave entrance. Access is prohibited before 0730hrs and after 2030hrs and the tide times for the beach are displayed at Papotawai at the Catlins Information Centre. Generally safe for kids with respect that it is on a tidal beach and kids would do well to be supervised in any case and it would be fair to warn that freak waves can and have been known to occur.
