Furness Abbey,was one of the richest Cistercian monasteries in England,exceeded only by Fountains abbey in Yorkshire. The abbey is a fascinating place to visit.

Furness Abbey was founded in 1123 by StephenCount of Blois,and originally built for the order of the Savigny,before being passed to the Cistercians in 1147.
Situated in the valley of the deadly nightshade it is built of local Sandstone.
