The Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy (Transfiguration of the Savior) monastery in Yaroslavl was founded in latter half of the 12th century. Its Cathedral was constructed in the early 16th century on a 12th century foundation of a wooden structure destroyed by fire in 1501. The building has been modified a number of times and the unusual architecture shows an Italian influence with a row of columns at the front of the main sanctuary which contrasts with the more typical three domed Russian style on the adjacent part of the structure. There has been considerable reconstruction from 1919 to 1961.
The Cathedral and the surrounding monastery complex are maintained as part of the Yaroslavl Historical and Architectural Museum.
