The school house, built in 1794 was the first and for many years the only school in then Northfield. It was not a free school, it was built by subscription, with settlers taking as many shares as they had children in school. Tuition was $1.00 per child, per semester, which was alot of money in those days. The first schoolmaster was John Barrows. The original log building was razed in 1806, replaced by a frame building and finally the the present brick building was constructed in 1857.
