There is a sign which tells the story of the lion, it reads as follows:

The Stone Crowned Lion, formerly incorporated into a house in St Osyths Lane, Oundle, was presented to Fotheringhay church in 1976.

Originally from Fotheringhay Castle the lion appears to be one of a pair of supporters to a shield which once formed part of a Royal Coat of Arms.

The White Lion occurs elsewhere in Fotheringhay Church. It is part of the fine carved Royal Coat of Arms in the pulpit, which was given to the church by Edward IV.

The Lion was restored and placed in its present position in 1995 using funds generously donated by Members of the Steanforde and Fitzwilliam Lodges of the Honourable Order of Mark Master Masons.
