"The symbolic statue is the companion to Daniel Chester French's 'Sculpture.'
The pieces were originally produced in plaster. The artists were commissioned to
reproduce them in marble to permanently occupy the same location as they had
during the fair, with Sculpture on the west and Painting on the east.
Saint-Gaudens trained as a cameo cutter before joining his elder brother, the
famous artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens, in his Paris studio. They moved the studio
to New York in 1898, and Louis soon went on his own. Saint-Gaudens died before
the end of the St. Louis project and his marble figure was completed by his
wife, Annetta Johnson." ~
