Kendal Town Hall was originally built in 1825 as the White Hall, replacing an earlier building of the same name which occupied the site. This was believed to have been an exchange hall for Kendal's cloth trade. The White Hall was converted to the Town Hall in 1859. Extensive alterations and extensions were carried out in 1893, when the north section of the building was added. A new tower and eleven bells were added at this time, they were first rung for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897.

The building is home to Kendal Town Council, similar to a Parish Council, and is used by the District Council who have further modern offices behind here. To the right of the main entrance is the Tourist Information Centre.

Front and left you will find an information plaque above a foundation stone, and an older stone used for pronouncements, the 'Ca Steean', originally in the market place.

The Town Hall is easily found at the main road junction on the high street. At the north end of the main street is the County Council offices at County Hall.

Above the doorway is the Kendal coat-of-arms. It shows two groups of teasels (a prickly plant which dries like a sharp hairbrush, used for 'carding' wool) and bale hooks used for moving bales of wool, both emblems representing the wool trade. The motto, pannus mihi panis, is usually interpreted as ‘wool is my bread’ underlining the importance of the industry which, for centuries, supported the people of this busy town.
