The Staple Bend Tunnel , located about 4 miles east of Johnstown, Pennsylvania , was constructed between 1831 and 1834 for the Allegheny Portage Railroad It was the first railroad tunnel in the united states.
It is on the national register of historic places. (

The Tunnel is at the end of a 2 1/2 mile long cinder paved trail. there are informational signs at the parking area, along the way, and at the tunnel.
