George Eastman House is one of the oldest film archives in the United States and considered among the top cinematic collections in the world. The photography collection includes more than 400,000 photographs and negatives, some dating back to the invention of photograpy. The Motion Picture Collection is one of the major moving image archives in the U.S., thanks to the first curator of film at George Eastman House, James Card. Mr. Card instituted a film restoration program that has expanded into the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation. It is the first school of it's kind to provide comprehensive and intense training within the archive environment.
The Dryden Theatre was constructed in 1951 after the Eastman House received a generous donation from George & Ellen Dryden (Ellen was George Eastman's niece). The first film shown at the Dryden was Jean Renoir's silent fim, Nana. Since that time, more than 13,000 films have been screened. The theatre showcases the museum's unparalled collection of motion pictures as well as selections from the world's other great archives and premieres of new foreign and independent cinema. See website for the lastest showings, times and cost.
The museum also has a collection of photographic and cinematographic equipment, the Richard and Ronay Menshel Library, containing a collection of literature of photography and motion pictures.
There are many educational programs offered at the museum for students K-12 and beyond.
The musuem has many exhibits throughout the year and a visit here will not disappoint.
