Sunset speedway is open from mid May to mid October racing weekly
on Saturdays evenings.
Racing is held regularly in the following four classes
The
Sunset Late Models are Sunset's fastest regular class. They are minimum 105"
wheelbase, tube frame chassis race cars powered by purpose-built V8 motors. Motors are typically 9.5 : 1 compression ratio, although 10 : 1 is allowed with
a weight
penalty. Underslung chassis are allowed.
The bodies are made from sheet metal, fibreglass or aluminum, and are styled
after
North American production vehicles. These cars have highly adjustable chassis,
and
run a grooved Goodyear racing tire.
Sunset's
Thunder Cars are highly competitive rear wheel drive North American racing
machines. They are V6 or V8 powered (as stock for its particular chassis), with
few
modifications allowed to the drivetrain. The chassis are also very close to
stock, and
ride on a specialized racing tire. Most teams opt for GM chassis and drivetrain,
but
some Ford and Dodge powered cars also compete. For 2004, compact trucks are now
legal chassis types to use in this class.
These restrictions keep this class very close and competitive, often culminating
to a
close points chase through the entire season.
The
Four Cylinder class has developed into one of the most action-packed. The series
is
open to any four cylinder passenger car (with some exceptions) with a
displacement of no
more than 2500CC and a wheelbase of no more than 104". Multi valve motors are
allowed,
but a weight penalty is applied for engines with more than 2 valves per
cylinder. Normal
street tires are used, and very few modifications are allowed to drivetrain or
chassis.
This class grows larger every year - low cost and a wide choice of competitive
cars makes
this series a lot of fun to drive in as well. Three, four and even five wide
racing is not
uncommon, making this an exciting class to watch too.
The
"Four Fun" class was introduced in 2004. It is a strictly-for-stock
strictly-for-fun entry level series, consisting of automatic transmission driven
(with some exceptions) vehicles powered by up to four cylinders. A specific list
of eligible vehicles is detailed in the rulebook. There also is a $700.00
claimer rule, which will help keep the costs to an absolute minimum. It should
also be noted that it is not necessary for these vehicles to be hauled to and
from the track each week - storage is available in the pits for regular
registered cars throughout
the season with "work time" every Wednesday during the regularly scheduled
practice sessions. All these features make this an incredibly affordable and fun
class to race in!
