In his railroad route exploration report of 1853, R.S. Williamson wrote about the large valley oak with the following deeply carved into the wood: "Peter LeBeck, killed by a x bear, Oct. 17, 1837". Nothing else is known about the life or death of Peter LeBeck.

The ECV plaque states: "In memory of a pioneer of whom only conjecture can speak". Dedicated October 14, 1972 by E Clampus Vitus Peter LeBeck Chapter 1866.
