The US Army had its first and only 'Camel Brigade' headquartered here at Ft. Tejon, CA. Lt. Edward F. Beale commanded the Brigade from San Antonio, Texas to Ft. Tejon during late 1850's, until the herd was finally transferred and subsequently sold at auction due to their poor health and the high cost of feeding them.
