Howard Forrester was one of the best and most accomplished old time fiddle players in Country Music. He is perhaps best remembered for his weekly appearances on the Grand Ole Opry as a member of Roy Acuff’s Smokey Mountain Boys. Howard joined The Smokey Mountain Boys in 1951 and remained with the group until his death in 1987. Howard Forrester is buried in Nashville’s Spring Hill Cemetery just a few yards from the where his long time boss and friend, Roy Acuff is buried. (visit link)


Description:
Howard Forrester was born on March 31, 1922 and grew to become one of the best old time fiddle player in country music. Howard, whose nickname was “Howdy,” or “Big Howdy,” began his country music career with a group known as the Tennessee Valley Boys, which also included another well-known fiddle player, Arthur Smith. In the early 1940’s Howard joined Bill Monroe’s “Bluegrass Boys,” staying with the group until he was drafted into military service in 1942. When he was discharge from the military in 1945, Howard rejoined the Bluegrass Boys, staying only for a couple of month before moving to the mid-west where he played with a bluegrass band that included his wife Wilene and his brother Joe. In 1951, Howard and Wilene returned to the Nashville and Howard went to work almost immediately for Roy Acuff. For the next 36-year (1951-1987) Howard Forrester remained a member of Roy Acuff’s, “Smokey Mountain Boys,” which became one of the most popular groups ever to appear on the Grand Ole Opry. Howard Forrester died on August 1, 1987 and is buried in Nashville’s Spring Hill Cemetery just a short distance for his long time boss and friend, Roy Acuff.
