The Battle of Port Republic was the last battle in Stonewall Jackson's signature "Valley" campaign and was fought on 9 June 1862. This battle was a victory for the Confederates. During this battle, Pvt. John Gray, Company B of the 5th Ohio Infantry, "mounted an artillery horse of the enemy and captured a brass 6-pound piece in the face of the enemy's fire and brought it to the rear." (text of Pvt. Gray's Medal of Honor Citation). John Gray was born in Scotland date unknown. He died 1 June 1889. His medal was issued 14 March 1864.
