I don't know about your childhood and the songs that you learned, but around here, we ALL learned the song about the Erie Canal!
It goes by the title "The Erie Canal Song" as well as "Low Bridge, Everybody Down," "Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal", and "Mule Named Sal,".
I have heard the lyrics sung as either "15 Miles" or "15 Years" also. The song was written by Thomas Allen in 1905. The canal itself was an engineering marvel of 325 miles, that opened in 1825.
It is still in use, and today it ends in The Tonawanda's, not Buffalo. It is here that it now joins up with the Niagara River to complete the trek to Buffalo.
I am including a link to the Erie Canal website as well as a link to the song where you can click on it and listen to it being sung!
