The town of Zarcero was erected as a city in 1918, but was inhabited long before by indigenous people. Zarcero, head city of its cantón Alfaro Ruiz, is home to a famous wooden, gothic, and renaissance parish church constructed in 1895, dedicated to the archangel of San Rafael. The zarcereños take much pride in their divine symbol, which stands decorated in front of world-renowned topiary creations (bulbous bushes clipped in fantasy shapes like dancing animals and double arches). The high-altitude weather -- fresh, clean, and cold for Costa Rica -- helps preserve Zarcero's charm.
