The mural depicts various aspects of time. In the center is a sundial which marks the hours of the day. The gnomon or style of the sundial is a triangular metal plate with a butterfly cut out out of it. Across the top of the mural, the 28 phases of the moon are shown marking the days. The rest of the mural is divided into 4 sections marking the seasons through the year. Each section shows a seasonal scene. The sections are divided by blocks showing the equinoxes and solstices.
The mural was designed and drawn by Robin Wallenfang Seibert. It was actually painted in a "paint-by-numbers" style by over 100 volunteers. It was completed in 1999.
The medium of the mural is paint on the concrete blocks of the wall of the library.
