The Peter D. Walter House is significant as an example of 19th century stone architecture in New York. Built circa 1858, the house is among Lockport's most sophisticated stone residences, notable for its unusual use of large Gasport limestone blocks in a regular coursed smoothly dressed treatment. Particularly unusual is the fact that this refined stonework is seen not only on the front side, but on three sides, with coursed rubble used only on the back side of the house. Also notable are the fine stone and wood details, including molded lintels and carved wood brackets.
Peter D. Walter was the seventh mayor of Lockport, and he resided at this house from the time it was built until his death in 1889. He was a prominent civic leader, serving as member of the board of education, village trustee, treasurer and tax receiver, county clerk, and mayor. Also, he was involved with the Masons and a trustee of DeVeaux College, now part of Niagara University. After Peter's death, his widow occupied the house until 1904. After that, two ministers briefly occupied the house, then three other families since 1909.
