Like many burial grounds used by The Religious Society of Friends(Quakers) Sunbrick is small and bleak, just a walled enclosure reached through a simple archway.
In accordance with early Quaker custom there are no headstones and few clues to the significance of this site on Birkrigg common other than a wall plaque in the gateway and some weather worn inscriptions carved into rock in the ground itself.
Between 1654 and 1767 227 persons were interred here it is believed most would have been associated with the Quaker Meeting house at nearby Swarthmoor.
