The Modoc County Historical Museum is located at 600 South Main Street in Alturas, California. The museum is open from May to October on Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The museum was established in 1967 with the purchase of a large private collection of historic artifacts. The original museum was located in the nearby Veterans Memorial Building and opened to the public in 1968. The current building was completed in 1984. The museum contains a large collection of artifacts and firearms including artifacts depicting the native life-styles of the three cultures that inhabited this region.
