This site was originally purchased as an athletic field by the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club in 1883. Construction was started on the current facility in 1925, and the new stadium was christened with a football game between the universities of Washington and Oregon. The first Portland Beavers AAA team had their own park, but started to use Civic Stadium for big games and holidays. In 1956, after the stadium was sold to the city, the team moved here full time. In 1973 the Beavers moved to Spokane, WA, and the gap here was filled by the Portland Mavericks (of the then-independent Northwest League) until 1978. In 1979 a second Beavers franchise returned AAA baseball to Portland. After the 1993 season, attendance woes (a frequent problem) caused the franchise to be moved to Salt Lake City. After a season without professional baseball, once again the Northwest League (now a short season Class A) stepped in and placed the Bend Rockies in Portland for 1995. In 2001, the city sold the naming rights to Portland General Electric, and completed a $38.5 million renovation *almost* in time to host the newly moved franchise from Albuquerque. Almost, because the newest Beavers had to play their first eight home games in Pasco, WA. PGE Park is scheduled to hold the AAA all-star game in 2009. The stadium itself is a single decked granstand in the shape of a capital letter "J". The upper part goes down to the right field wall, and the curve makes for a large amount of foul territory behind third base. Beyond the conventional left field fence is a high wall, above which is the public sidewalk behind a wrought-iron fence. This could allow for an outfield similar to the Green Monster in Boston, but there is no evidence that this has ever been tried here.
