In 1855, the County of Merced, parted from Mariposa County, and was organized with the county seat in Snelling. The actual "first" Merced County Court was held at "The court house tree which stood in Sec. 23, T. 8 S., R. 14 E., where first county court was held 1855.
"The tree was killed in winter of 1868-69 by an accumulation of sediment or mining debris caused by floods, and was cut down and made into stove fuel in 1869.
The county seat had been moved to Snelling's Ranch and the new court house built there occupied, in 1857. The county seat was moved from Snelling to Merced in 1872 and the "New" courthouse was built in 1875.
