Jeremy Michael Hodge was born in Japan on July 7, 1985, and died in Baghdad Iraq when his convoy was attacked by Iraqi insurgents on October 10, 2005. He was a member of the National Guard Bravo Company, 612th Engineering Battalion.
According to local television and newspaper reports, his father, Mike, spent much time planning a fitting tribute to his son. He spent six months, and nearly $12,000 planning the memorial. He also had to receive special permission from the township trustees as the memorial is wider than normal, and also required a special footer to support the stone's 3,300 lb weight.
Standing 5 foot 10 inches, the polished black stone depicts Hodge on the front in his military uniform, with an M-16 at ready. Beside the stone is a flag pole, some of his military gear, his high school football helmet, a concrete cast of a military helmet and boots, and other smaller items that both were significant in his life, and items that visitors have left. The back of the stone depicts the American flag, a pickup truck featuring images of Jeremy Hodge, a military plaque, and the phrase "Hollywood Out."
