Samuel Finley Breese Morse (April 27, 1791 – April 2, 1872) was an American painter but he is better known as the inventor of the telegraph as well as Morse Code.
The house was built by John and Isabella Montgomery in 1830. After purchasing the estate in 1847, Morse decided to add a north and south wing to the house which created somewhat of an octagonal structure. Additionally, Morse had a four story tower added to the West end of the house which overlooks the Hudson River. The final addition was in 1901 when the Young family added a large dining room to the north end of the house.
