The east half of the Old Patent Building houses the National Portrait Gallery with its five permanent exhibits. On ground level is American Origins, containing eleven galleries in which the history of America unfolds through portraits of individuals that were important in the country’s development, from pre-Colonial times to the Gilded Age of the late 19th century.
On the second floor, America’s Presidents houses portraits of every American president from George Washington to Bill Clinton. On the third floor are four galleries with portraiture of twentieth century Americans and, above that on the mezzanine, are two current galleries - Bravo!, devoted to figures in performing arts, and Champions, devoted to those in sports.
