The building at Akerstraat 7 in Heerlen knows a very rich history. In the books the location is already mentioned in 1722 as the "Huis aan den Slagboom", the function of which was a tollhouse.
Bijsmans was then already the entry to Heerlen.
Around 1900 the cafe was bought by the family Bijsmans, who connected their name to the cafe. In 1973 "Bijs" changed ownership, but the name will stay the same. Auberge bijsmans, the livingroom of Heerlen, is a connectionpoint for the young and the old.
