Commanding Artillery Battalion attached to
Alexander P. Stewart's Corps (C.S.A.)- killed in action
while supervising placement of two sections
of Selden's Ala. Battery, Lt. Chas W. Lovelace,
commanding, near the Embry House, July 20th,
1864, during the battle of Peachtree Creek.
This battery was in support of Reynold's Brigade (C.S.A.)
as it swept N.E. across the Embry Plantation and the road
toward the re-entrant angle of the Federal Line N. of the deep
ravine.
Maj. Preston, a native of S. Carolina, was the "Willie Preston"
of Mary Byokins Chestnut's, "A Diary of Dixie."
