The walls of Nîmes built in 16-15 BC were 7 km long, enclosing 220 hectares. With a height of 9 m and 2 m wide, they included some ten gates and about 80 towers, including the Tour Magne.

The Porte d'Auguste (Augustus gate) consists of two central passages for vehicles flanked by two smaller ones for pedestrians. It was originally fortified, with a tower on each side.
