The Tornallaz Tower gives an idea of the original aspect of the Aventicum wall towers although, owing to a somewhat imperfect restoration, it was provided with battlements instead of a roof.

The tower probably owes its survival to a prolonged usage as an advance observation post and optical signaling post in the Middle Ages.
The visitor can enter the tower and climb the stairs to the top of the tower where there is a nice view of the town of Avenches and the surrounding countryside. This should only be done during daylight hours as the interior of the tower is not lit and a climb could be dangerous in the dark.
