Remember it is the responsibility of every person who visits a rock art site to leave it as they found it. Do not disturb it in any way. Do not touch it. Do not climb on it. Do not camp near it.
The Picture Rock Pass Petroglyphs are located on a south facing basalt boulder face about 100 feet south of Ore. Hwy. 31 at Picture Rock Pass. The pass is about 6 miles north of the Summer Lake General Store and Post Office. Photos of these petroglyphs occur frequently on tourist information produced by Lake County and local communities.
Additional petroglyphs occur on rimrocks and indivdual boulders to the south and west of the highway. There is also reported to be single small red pictograph in the vicinity.
At the time of European contact the predominate Native Amerian group using the area was the Northern Paiute. Many of the petroglyphs of southeast Oregon may date to the time of the Pluvial Lakes which fill many of the desert basins. Some estimates place the earliest petroglyphs to as much as 12,000 years old, if so the Northern Paiute may have had nothing to do with them.
