The giant American flag was draped across Hoover Dam as the Olympic torch was carried across it in 1996, on its way to Atlanta, Georgia.
Thomas Demski had the flag made to capture the Guinness designation of the World's Largest Flag. It cost $80,000, weights 3,000 pounds, and measures 255 by 505 feet.
It took the efforts of 200 people and several hours to maneuver the flag across the dam. Unfortunately, high winds began to tear the fabric, and it was taken down after only a few hours. However, the flag was in place as the Olympic torch crossed the dam. Repairs to the flag cost $5,000.
Following Mr. Demski's death in 1999, the flag was purchased, and is currently owned by a private party.
