In the years following the World’s Columbian Exhibition, grand apartment-hotels were erected along the lakefront in Hyde Park. Most were designed for both transient and permanent residents, a combination of apartments and guest rooms. Construction of the massive buildings waned with the Depression, and the buildings themselves began to wither after the decline of near-by Midway Airport. Eventually the buildings lost all of their hotel rooms and became solely apartment complexes or condominiums - if you want to stay in Hyde Park, you’re out of luck.
The Flamingo was one of these apartment-hotels, built with 144 apartments and 16 hotel rooms. A central stairwell, with cast iron balconies on each level, separates the building’s identical towers and emphasizes the building’s verticality.
