The Whitney mansion is one of the most spectacular in the city of Detroit. It was designed by architect Gordon W. Lloyd for the lumber Baron David Whitney Jr. The house was built with a rare variety of pink granite called South Dakota Jasper. The Pink granite gives the home a beautiful color.
Whitney died in 1900, and his family continued to live there until the 1920's. It has since been owned by the Wayne Co Medical society, and the Visiting nurses association, before it was renovated for use as a restaurant.
In December 1986, the Whitney mansion became "The Whitney", one of the finest restaurants in Detroit.
During the renovation, strange things began to happen. The elevator moves from floor to floor without passengers. Cold spots are found in unairconditioned rooms. People are seen to walk into rooms and disappear. Some people think the Whitney is haunted by the ghost of David Whitney.
