Housing a fire fighting company and two horse-drawn fire vehicles - a steam engine and a hose wagon, this building served as a fire station until 1969. In the 1920s, the building was retrofitted to house motorized fire-fighting equipment. The building garaged the fire-fighting equipment on the ground floor. Like most fire stations of the time, living quarters were on the second floor. The building was restored in 1981 and opened as the Houston Fire Museum in 1982.
Inside you can see cross-sections exposing the construction methods. The second floor is a large, airy space, providing both light and ventilation for the living quarters. Of the three original poles used to quickly access the first floor only one remains intact. Once you climb the narrow stairs you’ll realize why they needed the poles.
