John Alexander Logan, 1826-1886, was a Civil War general who was instrumental in initiating the observance of Memorial Day and in finding homes for Civil War veterans. The statue is to commemorate his war contribution, his establishment of Memorial Day, and his work as Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. The cost of the statue was $150 and it is made of sandstone donated by Hot Springs mayor Fred Evans on March 26, 1894. The statue was dedicated July 23, 1894.
