Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the 3rd lighthouse to be built here. The others were either destroyed by hurricane or replaced by a taller light house. The current lighthouse is the tallest in the US. It has a double wall construction and stands 208 feet tall.
The shore where the light house was placed was encroaching the structure. In 1999 the full light house was lifted and moved at one singe time to approximately 2900 feet inland from its original location.
Tours are given daily to climb to the top. A small fee is required to climb the tower, but the rest of the grounds are free to view and see, including the museum.
