Tom Simpson was one of Britain's top cyclists, and World Road Race Champion 1965. He collapsed and died during the 1967
Tour de France (now the world's biggest annual sporting event) when attempting the climb of Mont Ventoux - one of the hardest on the Tour.
More than thirty years later, the tragedy is often mentioned: often when drug-taking in sport is discussed.
The granite memorial also has several plaques attached. The latest one I could see was from the family, who'd visited on the occasion of the 30th anniversary.
