Your final destination is a mountain top at the main coordinates for this waymark. You will find yourself on an Observation Platform which is at the top of a mountain in the center of the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to record the name of the person on the plaque attached to the railing at the observation platform coordinates and why he is a hero. The trail head parking area (and restroom) is located just off of Coville Rd. in the middle of the refuge. The easiest way to access Coville Rd is by turning north off Highway 22 onto 99W and then left on Coville. The walking trail is less than a mile and starts with a moderate climb to Baskett Butte. Along the way up look for yellow and white crowned sparrows perched on tree branches. As you pass a junction, keep left and continue up the butte to the observation platform. At the platform you will get a great view of the many wetlands that encompass the southern part of the refuge. In the winter, you can see thousands of migratory waterfowl using the wetlands. This has to be one of the best views of the Willamette Valley and its mountains. It is also one of the best kept secrets of the area. Only someone like you or a bird watcher would ever come here. Don't forget to jot down the name of the person on the plaque and why he is a hero, for it is your proof that you found this best kept secret.
