Father Pierre-Jean DeSmet was one of the most well known and respected white men by Native Americans. He was a Jesuit missionary to the west and was well known to Native Americans particularly the Nez Perce and the Flathead Indian groups. He founded many missions in the Rocky Mountains as far west as Washington and Oregon.
