Description:
Louis Chevrolet was the founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company along with partner William Durant. He sold his share of the company to Durant due to design differences. Louis was a mechanical genius but never achieved the business success that Durant obtained with General Motors. He went on to a career designing race cars. His brother Gaston won the 1920 Indy 500 in a car designed by Louis. He would later be part of another automobile startup company but it went bankrupt before production actually started. Louis would also design racing boats and won the Miami Regatta. He then joined Glen L Martin in forming an aircraft company. Louis designed the engines. However, he lost his stake in the company in the 1929 stock market crash. Martin kept the company going and went on to great success building bombers for the US government. The bombers used the engines designed by Louis. Once again he missed out on achieving business success despite his obvious talents as a mechanical engineer. In 1934, General Motors created a position for Louis and put him back on the payroll, largely a charitable action to the namesake of their most successful line of cars. He retired in 1938 after a cereberal hemmorrhage. Louis was already in failing health when he underwent a leg operation in 1941. Complications set in which resulted in the amputation of the leg. He never recovered, dying on June 6th of 1941.
