The Pritzker Pavilion was designed by renowned architect, Frank Gehry, and is located in downtown Chicago's Millenium Park. The Pavilion is the location of free classical music concerts throughout the summer months. The resident ensemble of the pavilion is the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus, however many other groups perform there. It is named for Chicago business leader Jay Pritzker, who established the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1979 with his wife Cindy.
The pavilion is said to have the best sound quality of any outdoor venue, thanks to the "sound trellis" that extends out over the lawn area. From the trellis, speakers hang down bringing the sound all the way to the back lawn section. The pavilion itself is 120 feet high, and seats 4,000 in fixed seats and an additional 7,000 on the lawn area.
The Grant Park Music Festival, which takes place in the pavilion, is one of the last major music festivals that is free to the public.
