Lt. Karl H. Timmermann Memorial - Specific Veteran Memorials on Waymarking.com

On March 7, 1945, under heavy fire, LT. Karl H. Timmermann led company A, 27th Armored Infantry Battalion across the Ludendorff Railroad Bridge at Remagen, Germany. This was the last Rhine River bridge still standing and it was rigged for demolition. The capture of this still intact bridge was crucial in the success of operation in this area and Lt. Timmermann became known as the "Hero of the Rhine".

The story of the capture of the bridge is told in Ken Hechler's book "The Bridge at Remagen". A movie by the same title was filmed in 1969.

The monument stands in Timmermann Park in West Point, Nebraska, LT. Timmermann's home town.
