Long Description:
Eagle Scout Eric Wilkens refurbished this 273 year old redwood tree slice, also designed and renovated the display. The Redwood tree cross section was obtained in 1992 from California's Redwood State Park. The new display is located at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, which is headquarters to the Morris County Park Commission. This 273 years old tree stood as a witness to many events in American history. The tree slice tells the age of the tree by its growth rings, which also pertain to events in our history. These points on the tree slice correspond to a date in history. For example: #4 1777 George Washington spends 5 months in Morris County, NJ with his troops. This Slice of History functions as both history and tree growth lessons.
