This courthouse is one of ten in Iowa that was constructed during the New Deal Era as part of the federal Public Works Administration, which funneled federal money into the construction of public works as a means of providing employment while contributing to a revival of depressed American industry. Its architecture is a blend of Art Deco and Moderne style elements. The courthouse stands at the site of a previous courthouse, facing the Mississippi River, which flows a few blocks away. It was placed on the National Historical Register in 2003
