Construction of this spectacular Richardsonian Romanesque style courthouse in Fairfield, Iowa, began in 1890. When the Sandstone and brick building was first completed in 1893, it was heated by steam and contained gas lighting. A wind damaged steeple roof was removed from the clock tower in 1948. A new steeple roof was installed in 2005. The courthouse was placed on the National Historical Register in 1981.
