The monument is in a fenced enclosure near the historic Monroe County Courthouse in the center of Albia's Historic district. The union soldier atop the tall, elaborate pedestal is nearly identical to the one on the monument in Chariton, the next town to the west. This one has a younger face and his head is slightly turned to his left.
