NJ DOT [No Designation, Undated], NJ, is a New Jersey Department of Transportation survey disk cemented in a drill hole on the north end of the west abutment of the US Highway 46 bridge over Overpeck Creek in Ridgefield Park, NJ. The disk is about nine feet north of the north curb or US Highway 46, and occupies the position of US Coast & Geodetic Survey bench mark disk D 41, 1956, described at the datasheets for PID = KV0507: (
visit link) and (
visit link) . The disk is unstamped except for the ownership “NJ DOT”. Handheld coordinates are N40-50.681 W074-00.723.
I suspect that D 41 was destroyed during one of the many times the highway has been widened and the bridge upgraded since the last recovery in 1962. Along the way, the NJ DOT retained vertical control by setting this disk.
To reach from the intersection of US Highway 46 and the Bergen Turnpike, known locally as the “Little Ferry Circle” in Little Ferry, NJ, go east on US Highway 46 for about 0.43 miles to the intersection with Main Street. Turn right and go south on Main Street for about 65 yards to a right-hand turn to Main Street northbound. Turn right and go north on Main Street (and under US Highway 46) for about 0.21 miles to the intersection with Brinkerhoff Street. Turn right and go east on Brinkerhoff Street for about 0.3 miles to the intersection with Teaneck Road. Turn right and go south on Teaneck Road for about 0.14 miles to the intersection with East Winant Avenue. Turn left and go easterly on Winant Ave and Emerson Street (following signs for “Challenger Road”) for about 0.45 miles to the intersection with Challenger Road. Turn right and go southerly on Challenger Road for about 0.22 miles to the parking lot for a Japanese restaurant on the right. Turn right and enter the parking lot, and proceed to the southeast corner of the lot. From the southeast corner of the lot, pack southeast across an entrance ramp for about 200 feet to the northwest corner of the bridge and the disk.
